I’ve come to value journey and process as an integral part of my art practice. So, while there are infinitely quicker ways to achieve my end goal, it’s not necessarily the best path for me to take.

I detested this pot….

… and the worst bit was there was about 6-7 kg of clay in it.

I was going to recycle it (one of the great things about clay) but thought “If I’m going to trash it anyway, why not have a play first?”.

I cut, I carved, I whacked and I pushed until surprise, surprise… it turned into something I love.

That’s the beauty of play!

These mad hands (hand mad?)….

I’ve had a really rough run for the last few months and while I would have expected creativity to abandon me all together, it’s been quite the opposite when it comes to clay.

I think it’s perhaps that with clay, there is no doubt who is in control. You play to its tune or you don’t play at all. You hand yourself over and retreat into tactility and instinct.

I find it interesting as someone whose primary medium is textiles that a lot of ceramicists often venture over to that world. Apparently, vice versa applies too.

It must be the tactility involved in both, do you think?

Finishing used to be my most dreaded part of creation, but I love it now.

It's such a quiet, contemplative part of the art process. The piece would be fine "as is", but taking the time to observe, sit with and play with the piece at this point is a pretty special time.

There's no pressure - this is icing on the cake.... or sculpture 😝

It's the sense of experiment and play that floats my boat the most though. Sometimes art can get all too heavy and serious.
